A successful meeting in Nottingham

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009 by Radio

The JEB Spring Meet-up took place on Saturday, 21st February in Nottingham city centre. This was one of our most successful meetings to date, with a total of 10 different people in attendance, including members of the growing local Esperanto society. We had lunch in a pleasant pub by the canal before going for a stroll around the town and seeing famous sights such as the castle and Robin Hood statue :) As the afternoon progressed, we tried out some different pubs, some more enjoyable than others, and chatted to each other in a mixture of Esperanto and English, depending on the abilities and desires of the people in the group.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable day, and some of us are already anticipating the next JEB get-together. Our current plan is to meet in Eastern England one weekend in early summer. Cambridge? Norwich? Somewhere else entirely? Feel free to get in touch with us in the forums to share your views :)

Spring Meet-Up In Nottingham

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009 by Tim

Since its inception a few months ago the Nottingham Esperanto Society has had regular meet-ups at various pubs in the hub of the East Midlands.

The NES, formed by Jebano Guy Johnstone, is frequented by several young people, including a few who joined purely to see what Esperanto is about and whether they could learn it.

JEB and the NES had a joint meet-up on Saturday, February 21st, the first of JEB’s four proposed for this year.

The venue was The Navigation, a pub which has a tempting line of real ale and a fantastic “Double Mega” burger. We were around ten in number, including a couple of beginners.

There was but occasional Esperanto spoken, but the steps in getting newcomers that little bit more familiar with us so that they may make the decision to attend Esperanto events abroad were taken.

The next meet-up is scheduled for around about May, and the destinations likely to be Norwich or Cambridge.

JEB at Ni Festivalu

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 by Radio

Three JEBanoj were present at the Ni Festivalu weekend, organised by the Esperanto Association of Britain at the end of January.

Tim, Mikeo and Clare travelled to EAB headquarters in Barlaston, Stoke to take part in a JEB committee meeting ahead of the AGM in Salisbury later this year. The issues discussed were many and varied, ranging from progress made on welcome packs being produced for new JEB members, to the JEB contribution to the 2009 British Congress.

All in all it was a very efficient and productive meeting, and the JEBanoj benefited in particular from the opportunity to meet former JEB president Geoffrey Greatex, who was able to give us an interesting insight into past incarnations of the organisation :) (more…)

Brita Kongreso 2009, Salisbury

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 by Radio

The British Esperanto Congress 2009 will be taking place in Salisbury between Friday 17th and Monday 20th April 2009. The venue is Sarum College, an educational centre located in attractive surroundings, approximately 15 minutes’ walk from the main train and bus stations. It is possible to book overnight accommodation at the college. Alternatively, there is a range of accommodation available in the town of Salisbury itself.

The congress promises to be an exciting weekend, the highlight of the British Esperanto calendar. The theme this year is Zamenhof’s legacy, as well as the culture of the surrounding Salisbury area. An interesting programme of lectures and discussions awaits, as well as conversational classes and grammar sessions for those who feel they would benefit from extra practise, and the opportunity to buy a range of Esperanto books.
