An exciting weekend in Halifax

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 by Radio

A group of JEBanoj travelled to Halifax last week for an informal meeting to celebrate the arrival in Britain of two foreign Esperantists. Tina (from Croatia) and Karlijn (from Belgium), who have both spoken Esperanto since birth, were in the UK for a week to visit friends Rolf and Petra Fantom.

JEB met up at the Fantoms’ home in Halifax on Saturday for an evening of games and pizza. Whilst Tim demonstrated a complete lack of talent for Jenga, Clare showed herself incapable of understanding the many international variations on the game of Uno which were put forward. Fun was had by all :) Later on in the evening everybody ventured into the town centre to visit a traditional English pub and the girls proceeded to lose rather badly to the boys at pool

Sunday dawned a beautiful bright sunny day, and it would have been a shame not to take advantage of it by getting out into the countryside. Rolf and Petra led everyone to the nearby Yorkshire Dales National Park, where we completed a very pleasant walk to Malham Cove, an unusual limestone formation with extensive views over the surrounding countryside. There followed a visit to a local carvery, where we had the opportunity to introduce our guests to the delights of Yorkshire puddings :)

A thoroughly enjoyable weekend was had by all. With luck we will be able to arrange more JEB meetings to coincide with international visitors in the future :)

JEB at the British Esperanto Congress 2009

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009 by Radio

The British Esperanto Congress 2009 took place at Sarum College, Salisbury from 17th to 20th April. This year saw an impressive JEB turnout, with approximately 10 young Esperantists taking part in the event. A fun weekend was had by all, and some JEBanoj even contributed to the proceedings. Andrew Weir gave a lecture on the Friday evening on the theme of Asterix, whilst Clare Hunter combined the minor roles of Onlooker 1 and Onlooker 3 in the play ‘La sonĝo de la kursgvidanto’ which was presented on the Sunday afternoon.

One of the highlights of the weekend was the celebration to commemorate 50 years since the founding of JEB. Tim Owen led the proceedings, having gone to significant trouble to obtain two personalised cakes, and did a sterling job at cutting them up so that everyone received a piece and no one lost any fingers :)  EAB kindly provided the wine to toast our anniversary, as well as the 150th anniversary of Zamenhof’s birth, and there was soon a very festive atmosphere indeed! Miaj Spertoj de la Internacia Seminario 2008-2009

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009 by Guy
