A Blast From The Past!
During the recent British Esperanto Congress in Salisbury, we celebrated 50 years of Junularo Esperantista Brita with a toast and some rather delicious cakes
In this special birthday year, it feels apt to give some thought to the history of JEB and all those Esperantists who have been involved with it in the past. The only problem can be actually trying to find any information, as the fortunes of JEB appear to undulate from one generation to the next. Well, fear not – help is at hand
Some members will hopefully still remember Saluton, the newsletter which JEB most recently produced in 2006/07 and which has since been superceded by the JEBsite blog. Simon Davies, editor of Saluton from 1991 – 1996 has just created an online archive, featuring past editions of the magazine from 1988 – 1993. The archive also contains a few editions of Ananaso, a publication aimed specifically at children.

That’s fascinating! Well done on a great find

I’ll be extending the archive up to 1998 in the next few days. Thanks to Clare for triggering the idea! (When I mentioned I’d been editor, she said: “Do you still have any copies of your issues of Saluton? Would be fascinating to see them :)” ― and I reckoned it would be neat for *everyone* to be able to see them…) Oh, and for old times’ sake, let me sign off with “mal-saluton de Sajmĉjo”!

Incidentally, I didn’t intend that bizarre smiley in my comment. I typed an em-dash…

Fixed. I presume WP didn’t know what to make of the ascii code (or whatever you used) because it had rendered it as a question mark and generated the smiley from that.
I think that it’s great that we’re getting our hands on JEB’s past. Obviously our stuff is available to all and in the future too, owing to the internet, but stuff from JEB’s past is lost to posterity, so it’s fantastic to have them appear here.
I really ought to add the old copies of Kial Ne? from the sixties too

There’s probably an embarrassing amount of “Kial Ne?” in the “Saluton!” archive. Certainly that’s where the Superzam cartoons came from
If the web of the early nineties had been what it is now, I’m sure the JEB of the early nineties would have ditched its paper publications too!
I’ve just added another three issues. Thirty-five down, eight to go, including an exciting twin issue with USEJ…

I remember that when I was organising the disposal of material from Holland Park Ave prior to it being sold there were some issues of Saluton from the days when Terry Page, Edmud Grimley Evans and David Kelso were active in JEB. I’m sure these issues were packed up and taken to storage at Eyke and then taken on to Barlaston.

I’ll have a look around next time I’m in Barlaston, Eric. Geoffrey King was kind enough to give us copies of Kial Ne? from the library once, so I’m sure he wouldn’t be averse to passing on anything else.
Thanks Eric!

Edmund tells me that he took two boxes of Saluton! history to the Butler Library in July 2005. He’s sent me some notes he made about their contents at that time, including a table of all the issues and their editors that I drew up when these boxes were in my possession in 1991. I’ll add the notes to the Saluton! website in due course.
