So you are realising that UEA and TEJO are cool mega-useful organisations, which you want to support and whose services you want to enjoy, right? If you have already tried to look at the membership-fee table and were perplexed at the rather complex system of membership categories, do not despair: Marteno is here to guide you hand-in-hand through the labyrinth, in which he feels himself right at home. Tongue So will you, soon Wink

Which membership category should I choose?

If you are less than 30 years old at the beginning of the current calendar year

  • MG (Membro kun Gvidlibro / Member with Guide Book) – do not choose this category. This is no good to you. You receive only the Gvidlibro (Guide Book - the first part of the Jarlibro (Yearbook), containing addresses of Esperanto organisations and some more information about UEA), but not Kontakto. You do not have the discount for the congress fees for Universala Kongreso or Internacia Junulara Kongreso, i.e. you would have to pay as a non-member. You are not a TEJO member either. You have the 10% discount in the UEA Bookstore valid for two shoppings in the year though.
  • MJ-T (Membro kun Jarlibro kaj membreco en TEJO / Member with the Yearbook and membership in TEJO) – Best category. You are receiving the Jarlibro de UEA (appearing every year around May). It contains addresses of Esperantist organisations (UEA's landaj asocioj and fakaj asocioj), information about UEA, and the network called Delegita Reto: these are addresses of UEA members ready to reply to your questions about their country, town or specialisation/field of interest. You are receiving TEJO's über-cool socio-cultural magazine Kontakto (6 issues in a year). You have the discount for the congress fees for Universala Kongreso and Internacia Junulara Kongreso. As an individual member of TEJO you can apply for the participation in its training seminars or to be a volunteer. You also have the 10% discount in the UEA Bookstore twice in the year. Currently the members in this category can view online the Esperanto magazine, which is normally sent only to the members in the next category. For a British resident this membership in 2011 costs £20.
  • MA-T (Membro Abonanto kun membreco en TEJO / Subscribing Member with membership in TEJO) – In addition to all the goodies of MJ-T, you are receiving the Esperanto magazine (the official magazine of UEA, focusing mainly on Esperanto-movado; 11 issues a year). Currently actually also MJ-T members can view it online, but if you want to receive it on paper, you need to become a MA-T. The 10% discount for the UEA Bookstore applies to all your orders. For a British resident this membership in 2011 costs £50.

If you are 30 or more than 30 years old at the beginning of the current calendar year

Currently the members in this category can view online the Esperanto magazine, which is normally sent only to the members in the next category. For a British resident this membership in 2011 costs £20. Unlike the youths, you are not receiving Kontakto: if you want to receive it, you have to look at the categories PT or Kto below.
  • MA (Membro Abonanto / Subscribing Member) – In addition to all the goodies of MJ, you are receiving the Esperanto magazine (the official magazine of UEA, focusing mainly on Esperanto-movado; 11 issues a year). Currently actually also MJ members can view it online, but if you want to receive it on paper, you need to become a MA. The 10% discount for the UEA Bookstore is applies to all your orders. For a British resident this membership in 2011 costs £50. If you want to receive Kontakto as well, look at the categories PT or Kto below.
  • PT (Patrono de TEJO / Patron of TEJO) – If you are not in the TEJO age any more, however, still interested in the activities of young Esperantists and want to make a special support for them, then this is for you. You are receiving the TEJO's Kontakto magazine and once a year a special letter from the Chairman of TEJO. In Universala Kongreso you are invited to a special Reception for Patronoj de TEJO (with wine, sandwiches, a nice presentation about the activities of TEJO and an enjoyable chatting about the future development of TEJO). For a British resident this costs £60 in 2011. This does not include any UEA membership, which has to be paid for separately if desired (as per the above categories).
  • Kto (Subscription to Kontakto) – If you are not in the TEJO age any more, you can simply subscribe for Kontakto to receive it. This costs £19 for a British resident for the year 2011. This is only a magazine subscription and not any kind of membership, which has to be paid for separately if desired.

The categories MJ(-T), MA(-T) and PT can be "pre-paid" for your lifetime, if you pay 25 times the yearly fee in one go, thus becoming DMJ(-T) (Dumviva Membro kun Jarlibro / Lifetime Member with a Yearbook), DM(-T) (Dumviva Membro / Lifetime Member) or DPT (Dumviva Patrono de TEJO / Lifetime Patron of TEJO) respectively. A member in the DMJ or DM category is a TEJO member and is receiving the Kontakto magazine only while being in the TEJO age: at the beginning of the calendar year when she or he is 30 years old, the TEJO membership ceases, thus continuing as a UEA membership only.

I've chosen my category, how do I go about becoming a member?

If you want to become a member of TEJO or UEA, or a Patron of TEJO: you can go to the UEA online membership signing-up form.

If UEA for any reason has your address already (e.g. you have been a member previously, or have taken part in the Universala Kongreso, or ordered something from the UEA Bookstore) – you have a UEA Code (UEA-kodo), which, if you know it, you ideally write into the 1st field, as it makes things much easier (it has the format abcd-e = four letters, hyphen, one letter, and you can find it on any sendings from UEA on the address labels with your address, or in the Kongresa Libro just next to your name). If you are new to UEA or you don't know your code, just leave this blank.

Now fill in your country, name, address, e-mail address (you don't need to worry as UEA contacts you very rarely by e-mail, and never sends out spams), date of birth, and then the year for which you want to become a member; you can fill in some more details, which are not mandatory.

To make it all even easier for beginners, here is a screenshot of the aliĝilo with inserted English translations - click to see it full-size. (this may not be necessary as everything here is very easy, but I am learning the technique to make the translated screenshots of some Ukrainian pages in the future Wink and I know you are already looking forward to them).

Subsequently choose the category of your membership as per the previous explanation (the categories don't have the "-T" suffix here, but despair not: if you fill in your date of birth correctly, the office staff will understand whether you are in the right age group and will add the "-T" to your category if necessary).

The categories are chosen in two steps: "basic membership category" and "supporting category": you don't need to choose any supporting category (or, on the other hand, you can choose "none" (neniu) of the basic categories, e.g. if you want only to become Patrono de TEJO). Upon choosing these, your fees for the basic category, the supporting category (this can be Innocent, and their total will be shown.

Then you need to choose the way of payment:

  • via a UEA Agent in your country (in Britain, this is the Esperanto Association of Britain) - choose "UEA-Peranto" and click on "SENDU". Then you can see the information you have filled in for checking (you can go back with the "back" button of your browser, amend the details if necessary and press "SENDU" again). If everything is correct, print out this page (or at least copy it down neatly) and only then press "Sendu la informojn al la Centra Oficejo". Send the printed-out page with your cheque (written out to "Esperanto-Asocio de Britio") to Esperanto-Asocio de Britio, Esperanto House, Station Road, Barlaston, Stoke-on-Trent ST12 9DE
  • with an international bank card (either credit card or a debit card) - choose the type of your card (Visa, AmEx, Mastercard etc.) and click on "SENDU". Check the details and if everything is correct, click on "Plusendu la informojn al la CO". Subsequently you will be offered a link (actually a button) to the "secure payment form" (sekura pagoformo) – go to this form and fill in the details for your card (you can use either a credit card or a debit card) – all the other details (name, fee, currency etc.) will be pre-filled for you. It is also a good idea to re-type your membership category in the "Akompanaj notoj".
  • via PayPal: choose PayPal as the way of payment and click on "SENDU" (you can still go back and correct if necessary, then clicking on "SENDU" again). If everything is correct, click on "Plusendu viajn informojn al la CO" (but remember how much your fee is!). Then you have to go yourself to the PayPal website and pay your fee to financoj@co.uea.org
  • there are some more methods of payment; e.g. you can draw the money to one of the bank accounts of UEA (in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Sweden or Switzerland), but this is probably too expensive to do from the UK; it is much simpler to pay to the UEA cashier desk at the Universala Kongreso (ha! but you want to become a member before you get there Tongue ), or to the TEJO Volunteer at IJK (you can come there and become a member at the arrival registration; but it is much better to do it in advance – among other reasons, it speeds up your check in to the IJK then so you don't have to queue in so many queues Smile ) or at JES (you can come there entirely without being a member – and it takes place at the beginning of the calendar year, which is an ideal time to become a member), or personally in the Rotterdam Headquarters (a very nice trip, you can take a ferry from Harwich, for example) Smile You can also pay more than your fee is, and this "extra money" will sit in your UEA-konto, which can be used later to pay a membership for yourself or for other people, or an order from the UEA Bookstore, or advance payments for most of the Esperanto events (even those not organised by UEA or TEJO), as and when needed.

If you want to subscribe to Kontakto only (Kto) – you can go to the Online Magazine Subscription Form of UEA, but beware, this form works in a somewhat simpler way than the one described previously. There is no "checking phase", so immediately after clicking on "Sendu" your details are sent to the office and off they go – so if you want to print them out you need to do it before clicking on "Sendu". If you are paying with an international bank card, you have to go yourself to the UEA page for membership and to choose Sekura kreditkarta pagado al UEA (Secure Credit Card Payment to UEA) and to fill in all the details (even the fee, so remember it!) yourself (do not forget to mention "abono de Kontakto" and the respective year in the Akompanaj notoj). If you are paying to Esperanto Association of Britain, just mention that you want to subscribe to Kontakto with UEA when sending your cheque. But this is only for those more-than-30 – younger folks should become members of TEJO instead, as it costs almost the same and gives many more advantages in addition to Kontakto.

Remember, that the office can process your membership only after the payment comes to the Centra Oficejo (this is what it says just above the "Sendu" button anyway Tongue ). Agents usually send the data about new members only after a couple of applications gather, thus in certain time intervals, so remember to sign up in good time in advance - the best time is the beginning of the calendar year of course, and if you are planning to go to IJK, then just right now Smile

Good luck! And if you have any additional questions, feel free to ask.
