Cambridge - 9th-11th March 2012
JEB's new and hopefully annual event, the Brita Renkontiĝo, is taking place for the first time in Cambridge. The city is famous for its world reknowned university, whose alumni include Issac Newton, Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking.
A new Esperanto group was set up at the university this year. The group has been very successful in its activities and has recently started organising a course for beginners. Esperanto has a long history in Cambridge; it hosted the 3rd Universala Kongreso back in 1907, which was attended by Zamenhof and his family.
Program
Anybody near Cambridge on Thursday 8th can attend a formal dinner that is being held by the university Esperanto group at their college.
Friday
People will be travelling down to Cambridge on Friday and as everyone will be arriving at different times there won't be anything specific organised for the evening.
Saturday
In the morning, we will talk a walking tour, guided in Esperanto, through Cambridge and its historic buildings including the iconic colleges and the Guildhall, once visited by Zamenhof.
For those that would like to, we will then go punting down the river. We need to know in advance how many people are interested in doing this so that the punts can be booked beforehand.
In the afternoon, we will move over to our kongresejo. The program will be for suitable for all levels of Esperanto ability. It will include a quick beginner session for newbees and some introductory games. There will be a couple of interesting talks/discussions and we will finish with JEB's AGM. If you would like to be on this year's organising committee or you have something for the agenda, you can let us know in the forum thread.
Sunday
The final activity on Sunday morning still has to be decided. Anyone who has to travel will most likely want to start setting off in the afternoon so we will leave that free.
Travel and accommodation
Cambridge is very easy to reach by train. If you are travelling from further afield, the nearest airport is London Stansted, which is only half an hour away.
The YHA youth hostel is round the corner from the main station and very close to the kongresejo. It is best to book your bed early as Cambridge can get pretty busy with tourists. We will use the youth hostel as our meeting point on the Friday.
Let us know, you're coming!
If you would like to come, drop us a quick note to 'komitato [at] jeb [dot] org [dot] uk' or mention it in our forum thread, as soon as you can. Don't forget to say if you are interested in punting!
Remember that British Esperantists aged under 26 can apply to NoJEF to cover their travel, accommodation and program costs.
