That’s the newspaper, not our life-bestowing star

Yesterday saw the 123rd anniversary of the publishing of Zamenhof’s Unuan Libron, the first book in Esperanto.

Not uncoincidentally Esperanto-speakers managed to get in a few interviews, thanks to the work of Esperanto Lobby’s Brian Barker.

Two Jebanoj (plus our friend Heather, who is a former member and now an honorary one) were interviewed by David Lowe of The Sun. Owing to space constraints the article disappointingly didn’t materialise in the printed version of the newspaper, but the online article is present for all to see. Well done to Rob and Alex for their contributions to what comes across as a positive article.

JEB is organising its first official camping weekend, between Friday 10th September and Sunday 12th September 2010.

The location which we have chosen is the Wowo campsite in East Sussex. Detailed information can be found here and it looks like a really excellent campsite, with plenty of facilities and even the opportunity to light real campfires

One of the aims of the weekend is to organise a series of discussion circles (diskutrondoj/Drondoj). These have become very popular within EAB over the past few years, and we thought it would be great if we could introduce JEB members to them too. The atmosphere will be relaxed and informal, the topics straightforward but interesting, so it should be a great way for us to practise our Esperanto whilst getting to know each other better

The campsite is very reasonably priced, so hopefully affordable for everyone. The nearest train station is Haywards Heath, which is easily accessible from London (Victoria). If you are under 26 and need help with your travel costs, don’t forget that you may be eligible for a grant from NoJEF

The campsite itself is situated approximately 6 miles from the station. Hopefully we should have three or four cars between those attending, so we should be able to arrange lifts for anyone who needs one – let us know if you will be in this position and we can finalise details nearer the time

Note that the campsite has a rule requiring everyone to book two nights (Friday and Saturday) which is why we are making this a long weekend. The advantage is that this means we will have more time at our disposal, and we are therefore hoping to organise an excursion to nearby Brighton

I’ve just received a note from Jarosław Fortyga, in his youth president of PEJ, the Polish version of JEB. I met Jarosław at the World Scout Jamboree, where both of us acted as volunteers in the tent of the Skolta Esperanto-Ligo.
Jarosław has recently been involved in revitalising SEL, and has released the following information for distribution:

Esperanto-scouts change the gear

The Scout Esperanto League (SEL) prepares a strategic action plan to commemorate its 100th anniversary in 2018. The organization of Esperanto-speaking scouts and guides from all over the world plans to reinvigorate its activities and offer a new programme to promote diversity by the use of the international language among the scouts and guides.

Esperanto, an auxiliary language created in 19th century by Ludwik Zamenhof, a Polish doctor of Jewish origins, was endorsed by Baden-Powell in the first edition of his handbook Scouting for Boys as a useful language for scouts. Due to its international character (root words from various languages) Esperanto has proven to have a significant propedeutic value in learning foreign languages by young people and throughout the years millions of people around the world have used Esperanto in international contacts.

SEL, as the oldest international scout association in the world, plans a series of activities for new scoutleaders who would like to use Esperanto in their scout groups and in the international context. In addition to local and to national meetings SEL plans to run a training seminar for new leaders in March 2011, and a European summer camp in 2012.

Saluton kara leganto,

Mi sidas, pensante, baldaŭ malsatiĝonta en bela arbaro en Durham. Mi aŭdas birdojn kaj aŭtojn, nur la paroladon mian.

Mi decidis plenumi mian promeson skribi pri la esperantumado, kiun mi partoprenis antaŭ kelkaj semajnoj. Do, mi skribas liston, por decidi kion, kaj kion ne, inkluzivi. Verŝajne mi fuŝis ie, kaj antaŭpardonpetas.

La vendredon post ekzamenaĉoj, mi alvenis apud Royal Albert Hall kun familio (panjo kaj du fratinetoj) kiuj afable decidis min tien akompani por ke mi ne perdiĝu. (Por tiuj kiuj ne sufiĉe konas min, perdiĝo (ĉiusence) estas mia plej granda talento kaj certe iu difina karaktero de mi.)

Post iomete da konfuzado (ekzemple mia plej juna, naŭjaraĝa fratino emis eksplodigi mian dormosakon kaj faris frenezajn sonojn dum mi poŝtelefone parolis), mi renkontiĝis kun Carlos, apud grandega statuo en belega, sunbenita parko.

Okazis ĉe la brita kongreso en Llandudno la ĉi-jara jarkunveno de Junularo Esperantista Brita. Kiel estas la kutimo de la junulara sekcio de EAB la kunveno pasis pozitive.

La komitato en sin bonvenis nova membro Rob H, kantisto de la konata rok-grupo “The Automatic”. Tiu alveno de nova juna sango ja estas aparte plaĉe, pro tio, ke la oficistoj de JEB komencas grizi.

Dum du jaroj JEB okazigas sezonajn kunvenojn, ĉiam en malsamaj anguloj de la lando. Pli kaj pli amase partoprenas membroj: De 14 en Londono aŭtune al 22 en Kardifo printempe. En la kunveno oni konfirmis ne nur daŭrigi tiun tradicion, sed ankaŭ provi okazigi aliajn. La unua ideo estas, ke iam antaŭ la venonta BK en Eastbourne okazos tendumadon, kun distraprogramo kiu imitos la popularan koncepton “Drondo”, kiu tiel bone sukcesas ĉe Barlastono. Tiu celas provizi al la Jebanoj okazon ekzerci en parolata Esperanto.

Ankaŭ pridiskutiĝis, ĉu eblus starigi JEB-programon ĉe Ni Festivalu, la evento kiu delonge okazas januare en Barlastono. Malfeliĉe la komuna opinio estis, ke eble tro multekostus, kaj ke la plejparto de Jebanoj povus alveni nur matene sabate, kaj ne je la vendreda komenciĝo, do ŝajne ne okazos iu oficiala JEB-kontribuo. (Ne ŝanĝigos tamen, ke individuaj Jebanoj partoprenos.)

La sola maltrankviliga aspekto de la kunveno estis, ke nur unu novulo proponis sin por la komitato. Pro tio, ke neniu volus kandidati kiel oficistoj Tim, Clare, kaj Mikeo devis resti en siaj postenoj, malgraŭ tio, ke Tim ne plu estas oficiala Jebano pro sia aĝo, kaj ke Mikeo baldaŭ troviĝas en la sama pozicio. (Pro tiu problemo, Tim dum pasintaj jaroj ne estas la prezidanto, ĉar tiu postulas, ke li iel plijuniĝu; anstataŭ, li elektiĝis kiel la honora prezidanto.)

Parolatis gravaj vortoj pri tiu problemo, ke la junaj membroj ŝajne ne pretas kontribui. Bonsorte tio solviĝos: Guy J, restariginto de la Notinghama klubo, baldaŭ revenos de Bjalistoko. Simile laste reaperis en la JEB-forumoj Daniel W, iniciinto de la renovigita JEB en 2006. Fine nova alveninto Amelia C kandidatas por voluntuli en la Centra Oficejo de TEJO dum sia paŭzo inter la lernejaj kaj universitataj jaroj. Tiuj faktoj, kaj ankaŭ la alveno de Rob en la komitaton, pensigas, ke eble nova taŭge juna komitato aperos en la venontaj jaroj.

The fine folk at the Esperanto associations E@I and ILEI have recently released a 24-page booklet titled “Discover Esperanto”. It’s available in several national languages, one of which, of course, is English.

The booklet presents a very effective introduction to Esperanto, both the language and its history. It’s main contribution, however, is that it reproduces comments from Esperantists about how and why they use the language. An outstanding example would be from the American Amanda Higley, who spent sixteen months travelling in Europe yet only had to pay for three nights’ lodging: The other 470+ nights she spent as a guest of Esperanto-speakers.

I’d recommend the booklet to people who already speak the language, since they might just learn a little that they didn’t know about the origins of the language, but especially to beginners.

If anybody asks you about Esperanto, I think that this would be a wonderful thing to show them.

The JEB AGM 2010 took place on 15th May 2010 during the British Esperanto Congress in Llandudno. A copy of the minutes of this meeting is available to download here. If you require further information about any of the issues raised during the meeting, please feel free to contact us in the forums

During our AGM at the brita kongreso in Llandudno it was mentioned that JEB could build on the interaction that the forums allow us by also making a chatroom available.

A chatroom would allow people to practice their Esperanto without having to type up a lengthy post. Potentially we could also be an instant-tuition service for beginners.

Thanks to Thomas, we have a new chatroom as of today.

It’s not yet incorporated into the main page of the Jebsite or forums, so users will have to bookmark it directly.

JEB are planning to meet in the beautiful town of York (northern England) during the weekend of 26th/27th June 2010.

On the Saturday there will be a meeting of the Yorkshire & Humberside Esperanto Federation, where Professor John Wells will lead a programme on the theme “Kiel ekspluati la vortprovizon de Esperanto” during the day. The programme will start at 11am and finish at 5pm. To take part, you need to send a cheque for £12 (which includes lunch and tea/coffee) together with details of your name and address to F-ino AB Duerden. (It doesn’t seem right to publish her postal address here, but it’s included within the information on the “Somera renkontiĝo de JEB” event on Facebook, and if you’re not on Facebook you can get in touch with us on the forums.) Cheques should be addressed to “Yorkshire & Humberside Esperanto Federation”.

The seminar will take place in Guppy’s Enterprise Club, 17 Nunnery Lane, York. The location is not far from the main train station in York so should be easily accessible for everyone

We hope that lots of JEB members will take the opportunity to participate in this interesting event. For those who don’t fancy it or who won’t be able to arrive on time, we invite you to meet up with us afterwards, when we are bound to relocate to the nearest Wetherspoons to enjoy the rest of the evening

We’re currently looking for cheap accommodation in York and intend to spend the night there. On Sunday we hope to meet up again and see some of the sights of York.

Mia vojaĝo al la Esperanto-aranĝo “Novjara Renkontiĝo / Novjara Internacia Semajno” en Saarbruecken, Germanio preskaŭ ne okazis. Unu semajno antaŭ la ekvojaĝo alvenis novaĵon, ke la dungitoj de la trajnfirmao Eurostar, per kiu mi intencis vojaĝi, intencas striki la tagon de mia vojaĝo. Poste okazis grandaj teĥnikaj problemoj kun la trajnoj mem – kelkaj paneis en la Manika Tunelo, kaj pro tio estis nuligitaj ĉiuj trajnservoj dum preskaŭ unu semajno. Sed feliĉe solviĝis ĉiuj trajnproblemoj, kaj la vojaĝo fakte okazis senprobleme.

Do alvenis mi, kun kelkaj aliaj britoj kunvojaĝantaj, ĉe la ĉefa stacidomo de Saarbruecken vespere je la unua tago de la renkontiĝo, dimanĉo. Terure pluvis, sed ni ĵus maltrafis la autobuson kaj do decidis piediri al la kongresejo – kie ni fine alvenis por trovi la ĥaoson kiu, laŭ raportoj de miaj amikoj, ĉiam troviĝas je la komenco de internaciaj Esperanto-aranĝoj.
