The position is vice-president of a new programme that will prepare Chinese students to study in English-speaking universities and preference will be given to people who speak Esperanto.

Semajno De Kulturo Internacia

Most of this message will be in Esperanto, since people who will react to it must speak the language. For the sake of interest, I’ll summarise it very quickly in English. I won’t go into any of the details about time and so on, since if you can’t read it in Eo, you wouldn’t be able to apply anyway.

There’s scope for young Esperanto-speakers to spend a week in Pisa, all costs covered. The mayors of six towns in the vicinity are offering twenty-five Esperanto-speakers (ten Italian, fifteen from elsewhere) accommodation and costs to visit the area and introduce the local middle-school children to Esperanto and aspects of their own cultures.

SEMAJNO DE KULTURO INTERNACIA Pizo/Pisa (Italujo), 18-24 septembro 2008

baldaŭ ĉe ski.esperantoitalia.it
</ hr>

The Polish Sejm (equivalent to our Parliament) has given its unanimous backing to the nomination of Esperanto for the Nobel Peace Price, 297 votes for and precisely 0 against.

Although Esperanto belongs to everyone, it was born in Poland, a country that boasts an MEP who is fluent in the language, Małgorzata Handzlik. She’s not the only one, either: The UK is represented by David Ferguson (Daffyd ap Fergus).

If you’ve chanced on this report and would like to know a little more about the birth of Esperanto, please feel free to avail yourself of our “About Esperanto” page.

And support for Esperanto isn’t localised merely to other lands: As of today, eight British MPs have also supported the nomination of Esperanto for the Nobel Peace Price.

• a unique work of international reference

Concise Encyclopedia of the Original Literature of Esperanto

This outstanding work of scholarly reference appears in English for the first time. No other such extensive descriptive work is available on this global cultural phenomenon. Esperanto
is the only planned international language to have become the vernacular and literary medium of a widespread speech community. This work charts the evolution of its original literature from its humble beginnings in 1887 to its worldwide use in every literary genre in the present day. The work is a revelation for students of comparative and world literature.

The Concise Encyclopedia of the Original Literature of Esperanto contains:
• preface by Dr. Humphrey Tonkin, Professor of the Humanities and President Emeritus
at the University of Hartford, Connecticut
• general introduction to Esperanto literature, its history, evolution and modern
development
• individual introductions to the five periods of the literature
• over 300 individual articles on the most important writers and their work in
chronological order, with biographies and critique
• sample literary texts from some of the best original authors
• an introduction to the language itself, its linguistic structure and creative capabilities,
including Esperanto from the Viewpoint of a Writer by Claude Piron
• extensive bibliographies and index
• a unique work of international reference
• an English-language companion for the literary enthusiast
• a ‘must’ for every serious library and media reference section

Esperanto is used on every continent as a neutral second language by people who wish to practise mutual respect for other cultures – and not merely advocate it. It has evolved naturally into a fully developed literary language, whose acquisition nevertheless does not necessitate the many years o study required by an ethnic language.

Esperanto literature is created by writers from many countries who have chosen to use it because of its merits. It is, as yet, nearly always a labour of love – that is to say a product of culture. It is also most fundamentally democratic – a product of people, as opposed to capital, power or national prestige. More generally, the precise nature of Esperanto culture is still debated. It is certain, however, that it is unusually aware. In contrast to other contemporary cultures, Esperanto-speakers are more likely to be acquainted with their poets, despite the lack of a state-financed education system.

The beginnings of the philosophy behind Esperanto may be found in the work of Descartes. This philosophy is the concretization of an ideal that has been incubated by enlightened people for centuries: If all our mental processes and operations should be ruled by reason, then the first field into which we must introduce it is that means by which we express and interconnect our thoughts, which is language. (Gaston Waringhien)

Leibnitz continued the work of Descartes. At the end of a French-language manuscript, discovered in Hanover Library in 1903, he wrote: When this project (of a universal language) is realized, the happiness of mankind will depend solely on themselves, because then they will have a tool at their disposal that will serve to increase their good sense as the telescope serves to increase the capacity to see …

Esperanto is a vernacular and literary medium that belongs equally to all and to no one, used by people who are universally bilingual or multilingual and generally support language diversity.

A number of JEBanoj have already signed up to attend the Internacia Junulara Kongreso (IJK) which this year is taking place in Szombathely in Hungary, from 26th July to 2nd August 2008.

If you want to know more about the congress, we recommend you visit the official IJK website, where you can read all the details about the location and programme (in Esperanto only), as well as view a list of those people who have already signed up.

This promises to be an exciting event, which presents a great opportunity to meet Esperantists from other countries and practise your language skills in a relaxed and fun environment. If you are not sure if you would like to attend and would like to know more, a good place to visit is this thread in the About Esperanto section of the JEB forums, which aims to give an explanation of the main events in the Esperanto calendar. If you have specific questions about the IJK or would like some help understanding the Esperanto on the IJK site, this thread in the Congresses and Meet-ups section of the forum is probably the best place to start.

We will be happy to answer any questions, apart from how to pronounce Szombathely JEB has already conducted some research into the best ways to get to the town, which is located near the Austro-Hungarian border. Vienna and Budapest are the most direct airports to fly to from the UK, and a spreadsheet detailing times and guide prices for all airlines (that we could find!) offering suitable flights is available to download from the forum. Some JEBanoj will potentially be meeting up in Vienna to catch the train to Hungary, details to be confirmed nearer the time

Prices for food and accommodation are very reasonable, and are detailed on the IJK website. It is worth noting that if you sign up before 30 April 2008 you will save money on your fee. A €15 deposit is payable up front, with the rest of the cost being payable on site. We initially had a few problems figuring out how to pay our deposits; the best solution seems to be to transfer the money via EAB but if you’ve got to this stage and feel confused, get in touch and we’ll do our best to advise

We look forward to seeing a strong JEB presence in Szombathely this summer
